Finally, the language debate has started attracting some serious contributions. It began with the unfortunate Sanskrit vs German controversy. A controversy which can best be termed superficial, ill-informed and rhetorical.
Over the last week, there have been at least four significant essays
that talk sense and draw our attention to the real questions about
language policy, including on how to promote Sanskrit.
Tejaswini Niranjana focuses on the real question of the state of Indian languages in higher education. http://www.thehindu.com/…/beyond-the-lan…/article6666911.ece
Then there is this interview with Ganesh Devy, the walking encyclopaedia on Indian languages, comparing Sanskrit with other Indian languages. http://blogs.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/…/fears-over-sans…/
Pratap Mehta brings out the how Sanskrit needs to be saved from its advocates more than its critics. A beautifully crafted essay. http://indianexpress.com/art…/opinion/columns/i-am-sanskrit/
And there is this article by Vaishna Roy about what should and what should not be done to promote Sanskrit. http://www.thehindu.com/…/comment-sanskr…/article6691221.ece
Please read these and form your opinion about this issue. We have postponed the language policy debate in our country for far too long. Lets do it before it is too late.
